Her Mother's Face
by Roddy Doyle -tells a story, fairly wordy -well written, likable characters -her mother died, father can't talk about it -meets a mystery woman who tells her to see her mother again, look in the mirror -resolution is years later, when she is grown -soft, wonderful illustrations -no religion -2008 -highly recommended, even as a story for an everyday reader |
Tear Soup
by Pat Schwiebert and Chuck Deklyen
-classic title
-entire story is simile, so the abstract connection will not work on very small children, but magnificent for children old enough
-each person's grief is their own to deal with
-Wise woman has lost her granddaughter before birth
-many helpful tips at the end, along with resources
--reassures children that it's ok to cry, be angry, etc.
-illustrations are good, and text can easily be read by an early reader, though some pages are long
-friendly dog and good friends offer comfort
